What Mucuna bracteata actually does in an immature oil palm field
Six-week seedlings, 320 per hectare, 67 to 84 percent Ndfa. The boring real numbers MPOB will actually defend.
If you have spent any time in the tropical cover crop trade, you have read marketing copy that promises Mucuna bracteata will double your fresh fruit bunch yield, sequester carbon, suppress weeds, fix two hundred kilos of nitrogen per hectare per year, and pay for itself in two seasons. The single Nigerian Utisol paper that anchors the doubled yield claim is real. I have read it. It is also a single site, has not been independently replicated at that magnitude, and is not what the Malaysian Palm Oil Board cites when MPOB cites MB.
This is what MPOB actually defends, drawn from their published bulletins, and what I see on real Malaysian blocks.
The establishment standard
MPOB Technology Transfer Bulletin TT-501, Best Management Practices for Oil Palm Cultivation on Peat: Mucuna bracteata as Ground Cover Crop, is the institutional anchor for MB establishment. The numbers it specifies:
Six-week-old seedlings, prepared in a nursery before field transfer. Two seedlings per oil palm planting point. Approximately 320 seedlings per hectare.
That is it. The bulletin does not specify a single rhizobial inoculant strain, a single fertilizer schedule, or a single weeding regime. Those choices are local. What the bulletin gives you is the establishment skeleton.
Why seedlings rather than broadcast seed. MB seed has a hard outer coat and recalcitrant germination. Without treatment, germination is poor. A published seed-germination study found that shell nicking combined with a 0.10 g/L Dithane M-45 dip raised germination to 88 percent give or take 9 percentage points, with mean germination time of about 4.25 days. Most plantation operations do not run an in-house scarification line. Nursery-grown seedlings transplanted at six weeks bypasses the scarification reliability problem.

The nitrogen number people misuse
MPOB Oil Palm Bulletin No. 60 measured biological nitrogen fixation by MB in a 3-year-old oil palm plantation using the 15N isotope-dilution technique. The result: 67 to 84 percent of MB nitrogen was derived from atmospheric fixation. That is the percentage of nitrogen in the plant tissue that came from the air, not from soil nitrogen pools.
This is not the same as MB fixes 100 to 200 kg N per hectare per year. That converted figure depends on biomass per hectare and tissue nitrogen content at the specific site. The percentage range is what MPOB measured. The absolute kg/ha figure floats with biomass.
When somebody tells you MB fixes 200 kg N per hectare per year, they are quoting a figure that is plausible at high biomass and not plausible at low biomass. It is also not the figure MPOB publishes. The defensible institutional number is the Ndfa percentage. The kilogram-per-hectare figure is yours to estimate from your own biomass.
Soil and slope effects
A 2019 IOP Conference Series paper by Wawan and colleagues looked at MB on three slope classes in immature oil palm: 0 to 8 percent, 8 to 15 percent, and 15 to 25 percent. Across all three classes, MB plots showed better soil moisture, infiltration, permeability, and organic matter than uncovered plots, with reduced runoff and erosion.
A 2025 Malaysian Journal of Soil Science paper by Tambunan and colleagues compared MB against sweet potato as a cover crop in Malaysian oil palm fields. MB came out stronger on several soil-health measures, including higher exchangeable potassium and overall composite soil-health scores.
A widely cited Sabah industry presentation reports that MB reduced runoff by roughly 30 percent and reduced erosion from 1,484 kg/ha to 80 kg/ha in the first 18 months versus bare ground. I quote that number with a footnote because I have not personally tracked it back to a primary peer-reviewed source. It is in the industry literature. I would not put it on a product page until I have the original measurement protocol.
The management warning
MPOB Oil Palm Bulletin No. 70 is, in essence, a how-to for chemical control of MB. The bulletin exists because under uncontrolled conditions MB does not stop at the inter-row line. It climbs young palms. It can smother low fronds. It can entangle developing crowns.
This is not marginal. MPOB published a control bulletin alongside their establishment bulletin. That tells you the institutional position: MB is one of the most useful cover crops in oil palm, and it will damage your young palms if you do not maintain the palm circle.
In practical terms: if the estate has somebody walking the rows monthly to keep MB off young palms during the first 18 to 24 months, MB is fine. If the estate does not have that capacity, and many smallholder and low-supervision operations do not, MB is the wrong choice. Use Calopogonium mucunoides, Pueraria phaseoloides, or a less aggressive mix.
Drought and shade
A 2021 Pertanika study examined MB harvesting frequency under mature oil palm. Two operational findings:
MB can survive dry periods up to about 4 months once established. Not drought-proof, but drought-tolerant in the seasonal sense. Regrowth after cutting is approximately 30 days. Compatible with periodic mechanical control.
Biomass declines under heavy shade. MB performs best in young immature blocks where canopy closure has not yet closed off light at the inter-row floor. As palms mature, biomass production drops, and shade-tolerant covers like Centrosema pubescens or Calopogonium caeruleum become the better choice. This is why on a mature shaded block I will recommend CC or CP before MB, even when MB is the customer’s first instinct.
What the boring numbers add up to
320 seedlings per hectare, six weeks old, two per planting point. 67 to 84 percent of MB nitrogen from the atmosphere in a 3-year-old block. Better soil moisture, infiltration, and organic matter on 0 to 25 percent slopes. 4 months drought survival once established, 30 day regrowth after cutting. Mandatory circle maintenance, or MB damages young palms.
That is the defensible MB story. Everything else, doubled yields, carbon credit cash flows, two-season ROI, needs evidence I have not yet seen replicated. If you are picking MB for your block, pick it for what MPOB will defend, not for the brochure copy.
